Sunday, March 13, 1983, at 7:00 o'clock P. M., the next quarterly meeting of members and guests will be held at the Masonic Lodge, 502 South Washington St., Sabetha. Dinner will consist of Ham Loar Scalloped Potatoes, Green Beans, Salad, Relishes, Rolls, Dessert, and coffee, with a charge of $5.00 each, and reservations deadline is March 9, 1983. President Robert Strathman called the Kansas Green Thumb office to inquire if the society could get a person under this program to be hostess this summer, and at this time, nothing is definite, Mary Ann Berkley, hostess chairman, would greatly appreciate volunteers calling her to serve as hostess until such time other arrangements are made. The plan is to sppemeeqgmimedarxhave the museum open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10 to 12 a.m. and 1-4 pem. and Sunday from 1<4 p.m.
The kitchen ceiling came down this past winter and has been repaired for papering. The cell block ceiling upstains paint will have to be scraped and repainted and shexhasenenkxsiepsxauayxxaiiingxand in the basement, the walls hopefully are ready for painting, and a railing will have to be built for the stairs before exhibits can be put in place. Needed are paper hangers, persons willing to help scrape the ceiling, carpenters and persons to help with the painting,all prior

Mr. Dan Reece of the Taylor publishing company headquarters in DallasyTexas gave a presentation to the Board of Directors om at their last Board meeting concerning the publishing of a Nemaha County Book. ‘The idea was tabled.
Anyone wishing to donate an exhibit to the museum, please contact your curators or other Board members. Hovefully there will be many new exhibit at opening
1983-84 Membership dues become due on July 1, 1983. Dues will still be $2.00 at that time and Life Membership is #50.00 each and M&XMKX Memorial Memberships are also $50.00. Donna Kirk will begin collecting these dues at the May meeting ac in the past.

Plans are to finish the rest ®f the business blocks by Easter or shortly thereafter, Lkxisxhapedy toxgetxehexquikhingxitonexxx We plan to hire the quilting done, so if someone wants to help defray this expense, Amelia will
be happy to accept your donation. It will cost approximately $200 to quilt 4+ guilts

ANNUAL MEETING - LET US ALL GO TO ST. BENEDICT
The ANNUAL MEETING of the Nemaha County Historical Society members and guests will be at the St. Benedict Hall instead of Seneca,on June 5, at 7:00 p.m. The dinner will be $5.00 and reservations may be made to the Board of Directors who do the calling. If you did not get a call because you were away when the calling was done, you may make your reservation with
Amelia Sudbeck, 336-2494, by June 1. Also if you need to cancel your reservation, please call Amelia by June 1. A reminder, reservations made must be paid unless cancelled by deadline.
The program will be about the St. Mary's Church renovation and it is hoped Father Bart and Joe Oswalt will be available to tell you all about it. There will be a tour of the church.

QUILTS: Since Christmas, 70 quilt blocks have been embroidered and nine are still left to finish the quilts. However, these are the "hardest" ones to do and will take a long time to embroider. In addition to those who were listed in the last Herpeeee Mary Sourk, Goff, helped since then. THANKS! THANKS! GREEN THUMB HELP: Vencille McClain, Seneca will be working at the Museum for the next 5 or 6 months under the Kansas Green Thumb program. He will receive minimum wage which will be paid by the federal funds alotted to the Green Thumb program which is sponsored by the Farmers Union. The Board set his hours for working at the museum from 10-12 a.m. and 1-4 p.m., Thuesday thru Saturday. Therefore, the museum will be open on these hours for visitors. Sunday and Monday the museum
will be closed except by prior appointment with a Board member. RENOVATION OF OIL PAINTINGS: Joe~and Antta Oswatt,; artists who” - nee finished the St. Marys Church renovation, have volunteered to renovate the Oi1 Portraits at the museum as their contribution to the museum. They have two out now they are working on, and some of them are too
far gone to salvage. Thanks Joe and Anita.
DONATIONS OF ANTIQUES TO THE MUSEUM:
The question has been asked, "How do I donate an item to the museum after my death?" This can be accomplished by including a clause in your will to that effect or by adding a Codicil to your will stipulating the item you wish to go to the museum. This is the best way to do it. The same is true of cash donations, after death.
Anyone wishing to donate an item to the museum during their lifetime signs an Accession Form releasing the item to the Historical Society for the use and benefit of the society. The By-Laws give the Board of Directors the authority to accept items or reject any item that is not suitable for the museum's purpose. Items that are accepted are labeled with the name of the donor.

Things are taking shape at the museum this summer. The kitchen has a new tile ceiling, put up by the Green Thumb workers The sidewalls were papered by Leonard & Anna Hammes and Donna Kirk, The wallpaper was donated by Dr. & Mrs, Lance Tempel & Mrs. & Mrs. Wilfred Christman. Earl Volz and the Green Thumb workers applied alum- inum paint to part of the roof. Leslie Droge is getting ready along with the Green Thumb workers to paint in the base-~- ment.
SEPTEMBER 11th ~ The Historical Society Fall Dinner meeting will be held at 7:00 pem. at the Goff City Hall. If you did not get to attend the Annual Meeting held at the St, Benedict Hall, you missed a fine meeting. Amelia and her crew outdid themselves on the meal and the hospitality, Father Bart told and showed us all about the St. Mary's Church renovation. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 1980 and
is enrolled as a Kansas Historic Site, 1978. It was a recipient in 1982 Kansas Preservation Alliance Award for Excellence, Interior Restoration. Thanks St. Benedict for a grand tour.

TS THE ONLY THING THAT CAN BE SAID OF THE OPEN HOUSE, it really was. With the antique cars outside on the north side of the building, and Dr. Berkley giving rides in the buggy, with
the country store and thefood stand, and the touring in the building, looking at displays that had been brought in, to add to the festiv- ities there was something for every one. We thank everyone who donated items for display to enhance the beauty of our museum.
Thanks to all who helped in any way to make this one of the best OPEN HOUSES WE HAVE EVER HELD.
On September 11th the fall dinner meeting was held at Goff. We had a good crowd and the program was especially nice. It was about the life of Irving Berlin done in song by the "Goff Quartet". President Earl was the host and he and his committee gave us good food and showed us a good time. THANKS!!!
In the last newsletter a picture of the love seat (oak) that was purchased to make our parlor more complete. Now a matching pair of end tables are needed to complete the set. Anyone knowing of such a pair, would you please contact Wilfrid Christman at Sabetha. 284-2273.
The Audit has been completed, thanks to the committee: Amelia Sudbeck, Dr. Lance Temple and Donald Lueger. It will probably be presented at the December meeting.

To focus attention on the role of historic preservation in the United States, the National Trust for His- toric) Preservation has designated May 13-19, 1984, as National Historic Preservation Week with the theme “Preservation Is Taking Care of America.”

More than five thousand pr vation and neighborhood or- yanizations are expected to hold events during Preservation Weck to help the public understand that his- toric preservation is not only an aes- thetic concern but a factor in the economic stability of neighborhoods, downtowns, and rural areas. ON MARCH 18th as we were preparing to go to Bern, one of our winter storms started about noon, so the meeting was postponed. On March 25th we held the spring meeting at Bern on one of the nicest Sundays in a long time. The Bern Quartet sang and Mavis Marti showed the film "KANSAS" and it made you proud to be a Kansan. Les and Lola Droge along with historical members from the Bern area were our hosts. The Bern Cafe served
us a delicious meal and we thank them for putting it off for a week. THANKS!!!!
We are still taking donations to help pay for the LOVE SEAT. Mr. Christman said we need a pair of matching end tables to make the set complete. A lamp has been donated to give the parlor a finished look.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR THE MUSEUM. We won't have a green thmub worker this summer so we must keep the museum open. The museum hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10-12 and 1-4; On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the hours will be from 1-4 Mornings will be by appointment. Marjorie Allison will be in charge of the hostesses for May and June; Donna Kirk will be in charge of July; any one want to volunteer for August and September. Any one who would like to volunteer to a be a hostess please call Marjorie. telephone # at the top of this letter.
Marjorie will be the contact person if you want in the museum when it is not open.

The dinner meeting held at the Sirloin Room in Seneca was great. Marjorie and Anna did the decorations and the meal was served by the Calderwoods. Phyllis Kramer gave a talk on antique glassware. Wilfrid Christman and Marjorie Allison were re-elected. Ruby Hecht and Rollie Cordon were new members elected.
The museum is in need of some fancy glassware for the china cabinet in the dining room at the museum, Perhaps you have a piece that you will loan
the museum on a permanet basis. If you do, please contact any of the board of directors.
RITA FIENHAGE and others are working on the Seneca Room. They are need of Funds to paper the walls and redo the ceiling plus a light fixture. They plan to have a food sale in the near future to help raise some funds. If you are interested in donating food, money or whatever please contact Rita.

SEPTEMBER 16 was the Historical Society Fall Dinner Meeting held at Goff, The Goff members were host and hostesses. Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Levret and Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Niehues joined the Society. The United Methodist Ladies served a fine meal and Raymond Battin provided the music, A good time of fellowship was enjoyed,
OCTOBER 7 was the date of open-house. We had lots of good displays, lots of food, and lots of people who toured the museum. Thanks to everyone who donated time, food and cash. If there are some members who did not get to attend open house, or donate anything you may do so by sending your contribution to Donna Kirk, Treasurer. With the flea market, the bank open house, a 50th wedding anniversary reception and the open house there were lots of people in Seneca on that day visiting. Thanks again to everyone who helped in any way make the OPEN HOUSE GREAT.

CHRISTMAS PARTY AT SABETHA
The Dinner meeting will be December 2 at Sabetha Masonic Lodge, at 7:00 P.M. on 502 S. Washington. This is located just west of the creamery in a new building on a corner on the south side of the street.
THE DINNER WILL BE $5.00 and will be served FAMILY STYLE: The menu will be Jurkey and Dressing Mashed Potatoes & Gravy Salads & vegetable Hot rolls-coffee, etc, Pumpkin Pie & Whipped Cream

acquisition of an old country school house. Does anyone know of such a building.

open house. They are as follows: County Store - 256.96; Food Stand - 349.12; oN Donations - 134.98 for a total of $741.06 less expenses - 146.07 = 594.99. The 8 balance in the checking account is $645.78; and the balance in the Money/Market

THE CHRISTMAS PARTY OF THE NEMAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY , INC. was heid in the Sabetha Masonic Lodge Sunday, December 2 at~7:00 P.M. The Sabetha members were
‘ost and hostesses. The dinner was prepared and served by members of the Eastern Star. Mildred Brownlee read the Christmas story. Santa Claus came with candy canes for all. Music was provided by Robert Rilinger, the group sang Christmas carols. Robert sang
a song which he dedicated to Eleanor Norton, his former school teacher. The candy canes and a door prize which was won by William Gleason Sr. of Goff, were provided
by the Sabetha members. Everyone had a good time. Thanks Sabetha!!
THE MARCH MEETING WILL BE AT BERN ON March 10th, Sunday at 7:00 p.m. It will be
at the Bern Cafe on Main Street.
The dinner will be $5.00 and the menu is: Roast Beef, scalloped potatoes, 2 vegetables, assorted salads, rolls, pie (choice). Jay Fankhauser and quartet will sing. There will also be a film on historical churches in Kansas.

The Annual Meeting was held on June 9, 1985 at the Sirloin Room in Seneca. At the meeting we elected three new menbers of the board of directors: Amelia Sudbeck, Phyllis Kramer and Mary Sourk. Donna Kirk was re-elected. Those retiring were Earl Volz,Odelia Brokamp and Anna, Hammes. We thank them for a job well done. Jay Fankhauser and the Bern Quartet sang several songs and a good time was had. Thanks. And now to apoloize to Bob and Maurine the nice folks at the Sirloin Roam for the boner that I pulled. I forgot to tum in 8 reservations and of course it was a lovely evening and everyone came, so some food stretching had to be done. So if saneone didn't get all they wanted, hit me over the head with a wet noodle. Thanks for having patience with me. I promised it will not happen again.

Our fall meeting was in Goff, and as usual we had a good time. The Goff United Methodist Women served the meal and Jim Dobbins had a group of railroaders (which is a group out of Topeka) give us a little information (talk and slides) about our tocal depots and
etc. It was good to see a picture of the local depots as well as Seneca's asa kid
I walked by, through and around it very day. Rev. Joy Schelussman gave three music numbers. Thanks Goff. for an excellent time,

THE OCTOBER 5, 1986 OPEN HOUSE WAS A HUGE SUCCESS, we had a good crowd, saw butter churned, homemade soap was available and Marjorie gave instructions on how to make: it, New members added: Mrs. Cyril Koch, Mary C. Stallbaumer, Marjorie Reeder, Gladys Heiman, Eugene Visser, Mrs. Aloy Haverkamp, Jr., Bruce Larkin, Pauline Esslinger
and Irene Graney. Welcome Aboard. The Wedding dress room was really nice and we thank those who contributed and worked hard to make it worthwhile. Most of what I-really-need to know about how to live, and what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school.
These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands, and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the plastic cup. The roots go down and the plant goes yp and nobody

really knows how or why, but we are all Jike that.
Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the lit- tle seed in the plastic cup—they all die. So do we.
And then remember the book about Dick and Jane and the first word you learned, the biggest word of all; LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and sane living.
Think of what a better world it would be if we all—the whole world—had cookies and milk about 3 o'clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankets for a nap. Or if we had a basic policy in our nation and other nations to always put things back where we found them and cleaned up our own messes. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

THE CHRISTMAS PARTY WAS IN SENECA on December 7th. It was rether wet, snowy and raining evening, but about 70 brave souls came to the party., which was held at
the Windmill Inn in Seneca. Thanks to the Seneca members for their hospitality.. Melba and Donna read several Christmas poems, then Melba led group singing.
COME TO THE MUSEUM AND SEE WHAT PHIL (our greem thumb man) has been doing this winter. I understand they need some volunteers to help sew the courier tribunes together. If you are interested in helping, please call Amelia and find out more about it.

The March meeting was in Corning. We had a great dinner and meeting. Thanks to the Corning members for their hospitality.
At the last Board of Directors meeting in the museum. on April 27, 1987, Pauline Esslinger, Bern was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Phyllis Kramer who moved to Topeka. A walk around the museum was taken to determined what needs to be done outside. Phil Huerter (our green thumb worker) will be helping us this summer.
We are still in need of glassware (crystal, etc.) for our china cabinet. If you have anything to donate, contact any of the above board members.
Wilfrid Christman, Ruby Hecht, Roland Cordon and Marjorie Allison are the board members retiring at the end of June. Wilfrid and Marjorie have served six years and the Ruby and Roland have served three years. According to the by-laws only Ruby and Roland can be re-elected for three more years. A year must pass before Wilfrid and Marjorie can be re-elected. WE SAY THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE and may not too many years pass before you are back on the board again.

On September 11, 1988 we journed to Wetmore for our Fall meeting. Peggy Ford and her crew were in charge. Mrs. Armstrong presented the Wetmore high school students who sang several numbers for us. Thanks Wetmore for grand time. There were lots of guest and over 60 in all. Thanks Wetmore!
The Board of Directors met at the home of Mary Gilbert on November l. Earl and Theda Volz, Marjorie Allison, Alice McGinty, Peggy Ford,
Ann & Wilfred Christmas, Melba Slocum and Mary Gilbert cleaned the museum for open house, Thanks to all of you.

from Harry Burger. World War I uniforms complete, some very early dressed and other items of clothing from Claude Anderson estate. History of

Our green thumb worker keeps the museum open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.Marjorie, Pauline and: Amelia did the cleaning of the museum on Wednesday May 11 and Wed. May 18. Thanks ladies. The couriers are ready to be sent to Topeka for binding. Donations of an Indian Stone, Wooden Plane and saddle bags and several bound volumes of National Geographic have been given to the museum. Several tour have been conducte Ist grade Sts. Peter and Paul on May 5, Sr. Dolores and 22 children. each sent a thank you note. Tour Guide: Amelia; On May 19, Grades 1 through 6 - 48 children and 3 teachers from St. Michael's school in Axtell. Tour guides, Amelia, Marjorie, Melba and Alda Wassenberg.
In April Donna and Lawrence were guides to a Nebraska Club Tour. ON
the 26th of May, Lawrence conducted a Seneca Girls Club on a tour.
The board approved of putting screens on the windows, painting of road sign, painting of basement walls, ving room ceiling and doing some work on the cell windows; New business was replacing broken office window, glazing windows; and consideration of having afloat in the parades.

on May 16th and 18th. This is the day where everyone comes to help clean the museum for summer touring. Be sure you are one of those
that are present. Everyone welcome. Melba Slocum and Mary Gilbert are ending their six years on the board. The nominating committee will be asking for your support to be a new member. Please say yes when you are asked. ;

At the Kansas Museum of History
Exciting things are happening at the Kansas Museum of History. The museum, located in Topeka, has pre- arranged tours and exhibits for students. In addition, the museum has developed an outreach program which includes many “loan” items.
At the Museum, the “Food on the Move” tour includes exploration of the early food sources of people in Kansas, preparation and preservation of foods, and survival on the Santa Fe Trail. In the “Recent Past” sec- tion of the Museum, Dorothy’s Rainbow Diner is a highlight. The diner is a re-creation of a 1950’s stainless steel diner. Visitors to Dorothy’s Rainbow Diner sit on a revolving stool at the counter and place “orders” on an interactive video screen. Along with nutrition informa- tion about their selections, participants receive a little bit of history about Kansas agricultural products. A nutrition “bill” is provided each participant at the end of their stay at the diner.

able for use in the classroom. “Enough to Eat? Food in Kansas in the 1860's” is a slide/tape or video presenta- tion that examines thy nutritional patterns of Kansas settlers, soldiers and Indians during the 1860's. Junior and Senior High students and their teachers will discov- er surprising facts about eating habits in the early years in Kansas.
The most recent addition to the Museum’s loan items are the “Wheatland Trunks.” Designed for primary grades, the trunk is a complete teaching unit on wheat production and utilization in Kansas. The two week unit is designed for “hands on” leaming.
The items listed above were developed under joint cooperation with the Kansas Museum of History and the Nutrition Education and Training Program at the Kansas State Department of Education. Mary Gilbert, Melba Slocum, Earl Volz and Lawrence Winkler are the retiring Board members. With the exception of Earl, who has served 3 years,
the other members being nominated are new to the board. Of course, nominations can
be made from the floor. Retiring Board of Directors will also be honored for their years of service. Thanks guys and gals! All board members and officers .serye without monetary compensation.
THANKS to the following who clean ed the museum and made necessaty repairs for the '89 summer tourist season: On May 16, Wilfred & Ann Christman, Marjorie Allison, Mary Sourk, Peggy Ford, Earl Volz, Al Buser and Amelia Sudbeck. On May 18, Wilfred & Ann Christman, Al Buser, Marjorie Allison and Amelia Sudbeck. Marjorie took the office venetian blindss home to give them a much needed cleaning. The ladies did the cleaning and the men removed and had new glass put in the broken windows from the hail, repaired the lower basement step and removed storm windows and air conditioner covers, among other things. Recogniton and special thanks to Ray and Rita Olberding, of the Seneca Sanition Company who pick up the garbage at the Museum for FREE, as their contribution to the Museum.

Hail damage on the 5th of May damaged the museum roof and broke 6 windows. Bowlinger Roofing of Sabetha has repaired the roof and the windows were repaired by the men of the museum, A safety check was made of the building, a recomendation to place exit signs at all the entrances to the building. Board voted to comply.

Both inside the office and out, their uses are virtually endless. In fact, it’s hard to imagine how the world “held to- gether” without them! =~ :
However, it wasn’t until 1803 that the
products was opened near Paris, France. Then, in 1820 London, Thomas Hancock

cut some hard rubber bottles into strips. From them, he made elastic threads that were sewn into the wrists of gloves. Some historians have called these ‘threads the first rubber bands.
In'1844, Charles Goodyear revolution- ized the rubber industry by perfecting a process of heating rubber to help it last longer. He called it vulcanization — after Vulcan, the Roman God of fire. In the United States, there were nine compa- nies manufacturing rubber bands by 1892. Today, rubber bands are being manufactured worldwide.
This is how rubber bands work. The rubber in them consists of tiny particles, held together in long, twisted strands. As you pull on them, the strands untwist.

stretch. When you release the-strands, they snap back in ptace.
In spite of Goodyear’s efforts, rubber bands will eventually lose their.elastici- ty. They become brittle and are more likely to break. So, to help rubber bands retain their “youth,” you should store - — them out of direct sunlight and. away - from heat.

Due to the absence of the secretary, Donna Kirk read the minutes of the last. meeting and gave the treasurer's report.
The following officers were elected: 5:

A committee was appointed to evaluate windows in the jail to see how many need to be repaired or replaced and give their report at the next board meeting.
The Courier-Tribune was designated official paper and the Citizens State Bank, Seneca, was designated official depository for society funds. :

met at the Museum on August 25th to plan for OPEN HOUSE which will be held on October 4, 1987 at the museum.

THANKS CORNING FOR A SWELL TIME AT THE FALL MEETING. Gary Brown, entertained us
by playing his guitar and singing some well know hymns. The supper was great too! Jessie Ayers, Centralia was a guest, along with George Monroe from Grand Island, Neb. Mr. & Mrs. Gary Brown were also guests. We have several new members and maybe at the March meeting we will have a list so that we can publish it. Thanks again, Corning. Several people have given things to the museum and if your name is not mentioned this time - it just means that they haven't got it recorded just yet. Sam Armstrong gave
a History Book of Kansas; Hospital gave us the birthing bed and several other articles; lamp from the Wetmore Post office by Elizabeth Schock & Tom McConwell; Virginia Koelzer donated 2 KS histories from Mrs. Urban Koelzer; Polly Leedy gave a box that contained the sermons of her great-grandfather G. W. Jermane and Grandfather W.L. Jermane that date back to 1869. They were both ministers. She also gave her mother's button collection that contains over 5000 buttons. ee E> eee

The Annual meeting held on June 10, used flags and other patriotic symbols in the theme for the meeting. The meeting was a huge success as well as the food and entertainment. Thanks Seneca for hosting the meeting. Thanks again to our retiring members, Ann Christman, Peggy Ford, RR Domer and Roland Cordon. Only Roland retired permanently, the other three accepted positions back on the board for a second term. Thanks Again. Wilfred Christman, long time curator retired at the June meeting. Ali Rose Stoffer, is in charge of the Green Thumb Program. Irene Fangman is the Green Thumb Worker. The hours at the museum are: Monday — 9-12; 12:30-4:30;
Wednesday; 9-12 and 12:30 - 4:30; Friday; 8-12; 12:30 to 4:30.

Your generosity was greatly appreciated. There were over one hundred people touring the museum, enjoying the lunch stand, shopping at the country store, enjoying the buggy rides and tapping their feet to the lively music of the "Two-Notes” and the "Bon jour Boys". Several people couldn't resist, and were dancing to the "oldies". The dance
was well attended with everyone enjoying the "Starburst Band" at Valentinos.
The next Board of Directors meeting will be 12 February 1991 at the museum in Seneca. The Spring dinner meeting will be held 10 March 1991 at Centralia, the time and place will be announced in the next news-letter.
Winter hours at the museum are: Monday, 9-12:30 and 1-4:30, Wednesday, 9-12:30 and 1-4:30, Friday, 9-12:30 and 1-3:30. The museum board met 15 November at the museum in Seneca. President Winkler Opened the meeting. Mary Sourk read the minutes of the 14 August and 9 September meetings and they were approved. Al Buser gave a report of the open house and the dance.
Don Richardson was contacted by the bell committee and attended the meeting to discuss how the bell Harry Burger gave the museum is to be hung. He will draw several designs, then he and Al Buser will confer with Mr Burger to finalize the plans. The bell is to be placed in the museum yard.
The cemetary project was discussed. If anyone knows of an old cemetary or burial plot that has been forgotten, please let Anita Heiman, County Clerk, know and she will check to see if she has a record of it. Years ago, many people were buried on their farms and since have been forgotten or overlooked.
It was decided to place an ad in the Courier for the Christmas dinner to encourage everyone to come and enjoy the fellowship of our group!

Have you visited the museum lately, perhaps you should, there are new things being donated everyday. Before throwing away anything old, check with the museum board to see if they want to preserved the item. Have you seen the bell that was donated by Harry Burger, from the old Liberty School. It has been installed and looks real nice.

The Nemaha County Historical Society, Inc., held its Spring din- ner meeting March 17, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Centralia. Ninety-one members and guests were present. Guests were Harry Burger, Seneca; Mr. and Mrs. Marvin McGuire, Onaga: Gary Satter, Valley Falls; and Nancy Sandehn. The Centralia members hosted the event and decorated the tables in a St. Patrick’s theme.
President Albert Winkler welcomed everyone, led the Pledge of Allegiance. and read a prayer. He introduced Red and Grace Kelley, who were in charge of the program. Grace led the group in singing the table grace. then all enjoyed the delicious ham loaf dinner served by the Fellowship ladies of the church.
Red introduced the “Two Notes,” Mr. and Mrs, Marvin McGuire; they played old-time
\eeeftnes and several Irish songs for the occasion.
Winkler introduced the guest speaker, Nancy Sandehn. She spoke about her work with Mo- Kan and the Cultural Resource Survey she does for the RC&D. She explained how she covers the
_ county, taking’pictures, documen- ting buildings and. other sites, then
putting all of this information on a
resources inventory form. She showed examples of the forms, how they were filled out, then passed two examples of survey booklets around showing work she had completed for other counties. She gave several exam- ples of buildings that had much historical value: St. Mary's Church at St. Benedict, the Township Hall at Baileyville, Harry Burger's
~ unusual barn, and the Main Street
of Bern. She answered questions from the floor.
Winkler thanked Frank Mathewson for installing an elec- tric door chime at the museum, so Mrs. Fangman will know when someone has entered.
Grace Kelley read a memorial for our recent deceased members, Amelia and Linus Sudbeck. Melba Slocum. Lawrence
_Winkler, and Dr. Gilbert. They will be greatly missed for their years of dedicated service for the Historical Society.

‘ memorial in Amelia's name. They
_ also presented the society with a ~ plaque in honor of Amelia's
dedicated service as a founder and charter member of the
society. The plaque will be hung |
in the museum as a memorial to Amelia.
Winkler appointed a “nominating committee ‘of Ann Christman, Donna Kirk and Joyce Olberding. Their report will be given at the next dinner meeting.
Anita Heiman, County Clerk. asked if the Historical Society would like to participate in County Government Day on April 10. Winkler accepted and asked for volunteers to help at the museum that day.
The next dinner meeting will be June 9, with the St. Benedict members as hosts. The time and place will be announced later.
Winkler adjourned the dinner meeting, and a short board meeting followed.
The board meeting opened with a discussion of the June dinner meeting. The St. Benedict mem- bers will decide as they are the hosts, and it will be announced in the Pioneer Press newsletter.
Eldon Olberding ‘reported on the museum signs and also on the Burger school bell plans. Several other matters were brought before the board and resolved. .
Donna Kirk was approved as Membership chairman, and Wilfrid Christman was approved
' as co-curator.

At the last board meeting our contract with the Green Thumb project was not renewed. Most Of theprojects are just for two years, but we got a extra year because they didn't have a project for Irene to work on. So keeping the museum open three days a week has fallen on the membership to maintain the hours to keep it open. If you are able to work on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday, please call Donna or Eldon. We are sorry to lose Irene as she kept the museum clean and was hostess too. Thanks Irene! Irene is still working with the Green Thumb but in a different capacity.

MICKEY WILL BE A 100 on February 27. es Mrs. Florence "Mickey'' Ingalls will be honored by her family and friends at a private luncheon at the Seneca United Methodist , Seneca on February 23rd. Mickey will also be honored with a reception at the church from 2-3 p.m. on Sunday the 23rd. Mickey is a charter member of the museum and has donated the things in the office. CONGRATULATIONS TO HER ON HER 100th.

The two LOYAL SUPPORTER QUILTS have been finished and were on display at the Fabric Inn in Seneca, They were completed by ‘Mary Glissman, Wetmore. The Nemaha County Business quilt was completed by Arlene Esslinger, Bern. All will probably be on display at the Seneca Quilt Snow held at the Seneca Library on March 5th and 6th in Seneca, They look very nice and are worth seeing. Anyone wishing to display the Quilt in your place of busiiness, please contact the musuem curator, Wilfred Christman. Telephone # is listed above. THANKS TO ALL who helped with the quilts.
Donna gave a tour for Sister Dolores andher 1st graders from Sts. Peter and Paul School wm in Sencca, They wre accompanied by two mothers, Mrs. Chilson and Mrs. Holthaus. The
kids enjoyed the museum and several said it was creaky and also asked what bad
people had been in Jail.

decorated in a Christmas theme.
Mrs. Vic Arick gave the Prayer, . - then the cafe served a roast beef dinner to 37 members and guests.
Albert Winkler opened the meeting with a welcome to everyone, and then introduced the board members and guests: Mary Steinlage, Kelly; Bob and dudy Rilinger, Sabetha; Jessie Ayers, Centralia; and Mark Esslinger, Bern.
Mrs. Melvin Bergman read the . minutes of the last dinner meeting and they were approved. Mrs. Wilfrid Christman gave the treasurer's report. Les Droge gave a report from the auditing commit- tee. Donna Kirk reported there. are 247 members at this time. She will take membership dues anytime; just contact her.

Mr. Winkler read_a letter from the Colonial Homes magazine: They offer to publish special even= ts for our Society free of charge, and they have .a fund: raising; project available if we are in- terested.
The RC&D survey project was discussed. Several members discussed doing genealogy for people who have made inquiries in this area, by contacting the Historical Society.
Mrs. Christman introduced Bob and Judy Rilinger, who enter- tained us with music. Bob sang two numbers accompanied by a tape player. Then he played the guitar and everyone sang several Christmas carols, ending with “Silent Night.” :

The Nemaha County Historical Society, Inc., met June 23, at the museum in Seneca, for their Reorganizational meeting.

Historical Society hears reports at annual meet

Murphy, Seneca: Albert Winkler, Corning. Three nominations from the floor were taken for the fourth position, with Robert Yunghans capturing the bid.. Mary Steinlage accepted the nomination to fill the unexpired -term of Mrs. Melvin Bergman, who resigned. They were all elected to the board.

Seneca Nutrition Center. This is a refresher course to help senior citizens with their driving skills. \ Eldon reminded everyone of r the Nemaha County survey meeting. June 16 at the Windmill Inn at 7 p.m.

The OREGON TRAIL is celebrating its 150th anniversery this month
Did you know a branch of this trail called the ST JOSEPH AND CALIFORNIA ROAD crossed Nemaha County?
The Oregon Trail started at Westport, MO the last part of May 1843 and followed the Kansas river to Topeka, then went northwest past St. Marys, continueing on thru Alcove Spring, south of Marysville, then going northwest thru Marshall County and on into Nebraska.
Many of the emigrants used the St Joseph-California Road because it was a shorter distance to the Nebraska border than going the southern route. This road started at St Joseph, MO and crossed Nemaha County, passing near Sabetha and crossing the Bern townsite, continued on west, crossing Baker's Ford about 3 miles west of Bern, then onward to meet the main trail in Marshall County.
It is said that when the Bern townsite was laid out, the ruts of the wagons were still visible, running between the lumberyard and the bank building.*
An incident described in Tennal's "History of Nemaha County" tells of a group of Morman emigrants who stopped at Murphy Lake, southwest of Bern in August 1855, They drained the lake to catch the fish because of hunger. Forty of the Mormans died, probably of cholera from eating the fish, and are buried near the campsite.
The Kansas City Star ran a series on the Oregon Trail the past month and half. It_was very interesting and informative, if you get a chance, read it. Copies will be ze™\lable in June from the paper.

As some of you know, our Pioneer Press Editor and Membership Chairman, Donna Kirk, became ill in February and was hospitalized.
